  • COVID update
The covid outbreak has meant that we have had to make adjustments to how we practise. Our rooms have been operational throughout the lockdown period and we have managed to keep our service safe. We have offered emergency and semi urgent cases throughout the year and as numbers are now decreasing, we have been given the full go-ahead to proceed with full elective list procedures. Entabeni have gone out of their way to ensure patient safety and for this reason we are happy to continue with full operations. Please contact out rooms if you would like to come in for an assessment or if you have an eye problem you have been putting off having assessed.

OUR CORE SERVICES

Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are common causes of visual loss in later life. They may cause symptoms such as blurring, difficulty seeing in bright light conditions. The abnormality lies in the lens of your eye which becomes cloudy

Epiretinal Membrane Surgery

This is a fairly common disorder in older people. The commonest form occurs after the development of a posterior vitreous detachment, where cells in the substance of the retina gain access to the retinal surface.

Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD) and Retinal detachment

The vitreous gel occupies the largest space in the eye, extending from the back surface of the lens, to the retinal surface. It is an embryonic remnant and undergoes ageing

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

AMD is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in the elderly in the Western World. It occurs in the dry and wet forms. For those who have dry AMD, about 10-15% will progress to wet AMD.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes affects the eye in many ways. This section will deal with its effects on the retina. Raised blood sugars (>8) cause sorbitol to be deposited in the lining of the capillaries throughout the body.

Keratoconus & Corneal Cross-Linking

Keratoconus is a common disorder involving the cornea of the eye, where the cornea becomes distorted and thinned, causing a blurred image. It typically involves young people in their early to mid-teens.

Macular Hole Surgery

As one ages, the vitreous gel becomes more liquid and begins to collapse on itself. This may then exert a pulling effect on the central retina (macula) which is responsible for your clear central vision. Trauma can also cause the development of a macular hole.
